February is Dental Health Month, and we want to know the story behind how we care for our pearly whites. Don your dental detective hat and join the Learning Experiences team as we get to the root of dental health history during the Civil War with Dr. Gordon Dammann.
At the time of the Civil War the profession of dentistry was in its infancy. There were few dental schools, the first of which was the Baltimore College of Dentistry founded in 1840. After this institution was formed, 28 additional schools were chartered. These included Harvard in 1872. The American Dental Association (ADA) first met in 1859.
In this program, he will point out how the soldiers’ dental problems were cared for and why teeth were an important part of the soldiers’ body. There will be images shown that were used during the Civil War. Gordon E. Dammann D.D.S. founded the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland to tell the true story of Civil War medicine. His medical collection formed the core of the museum holdings. He is a graduate of Loyola University in Chicago and holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in history. In 1969 he received his D.D.S. degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry.
This program will premiere on Naper Settlement's Facebook at 7PM and will be available to watch on Facebook after the premiere by visiting our Education video playlist.
