About Leap Year Parties
Traditional Leap Year parties were chances for unmarried women to buck convention and approach unmarried men. There have been manifestations of this practice in Great Britain dating back hundreds of years. The Martin family, whom emigrated from Scotland, honored this tradition with a role-reversal dance in which women ask men (later called Sadie Hawkins) on Leap Year in the late 1800s.
