HERstory Nomination Patty Gustin

"Councilwoman Patty Gustin came from Lithuanian immigrant and Southside Chicago Polish stock. One of 6 kids, she helped her dad pump gas and change oil at the family Sinclair, and her mom to cook and clean while she beat breast cancer. Patty married out of the neighborhood, had a boy (now an engineer), and survived spousal abuse. As a single Mom, she bought a 2-flat to live and rent, and tackled dyslexia to become a US Attorney's Office paralegal. Patty ignored criminals that planted drugs at her home to get her fired and lose child custody by working harder at DePaul University to get a better paying job at FDIC closing banks. Patty remarried, had 2 girls (now an attorney and teacher), became a realtor to be an "at-home" mom, simultaneously volunteered as Lisle and Naperville Plan and Zoning Commissioner for over 15 years, and was elected as a Naperville Councilwoman in 2015. She always fights the good fight against alcoholism, abuse, cancer, Alzheimer's, drugs, and the discrimination that she and her very diverse family still know too well."
