HERstory Nomination Shobha Sankar

"Diligent. Passionate. Confident. That and more, form the leader, that is Shobha Sankar

As the founder of The Study Huddle, an enriching environment in which young minds are constantly encouraged to develop their knowledge, Shobha has the education to corroborate her experience. With a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and 20 years of experience in telecommunications, she continues to remind us all that we are ever-learning students. Currently, she is in pursuit of a Masters in Data Science (MIDS) through UC Berkeley. For 10 years, she coached scholars to victory at the chapter, state, and national level of MathCounts competitions. In fact, working with a group of parents, she brought Mathcounts to schools in IPSD-204.

As a woman fighting for her voice in a predominantly male society, she teaches students, especially girls, across Naperville to strive their hardest in STEM. In a response to her nomination for “Best Teacher” run by the Chicago Women’s Empowerment Campaign, she wrote that the presence of girls in math competitions was at a drastic minimum and she aimed to, “[dispel] the notion that [math] is a boy’s field”.

As an educator, she trains numerous kids through her math and coding classes and states that, “young minds can take [on] any challenge if the inner spark is ignited.”

Millions of entrepreneurs have popped up around America wanting to cash in on the ever-expanding business of tutoring. In the Naperville community, only a few succeed, and of those is Mrs. Sankar."
