Adventures into the Past - Soapmaking

Watch historical demonstrations, make crafts, and learn about history at our on-site activities from May through October. These activities are included in general museum admission at Naper Settlement. Please see the schedule below for the dates and times of this month's activities. September 2022 Schedule

Blast back in history with Adventures Into the Past at Naper Settlement! Each month there will be a different theme with crafts, activities, and demonstrations pertaining to the theme. September's theme is all about art.

September 27 | 10AM-1PM 

  • Basket Weaving: Baskets have been a vital product that humans have been making for centuries. Explore the art of basket weaving.
  • Knitting Basics: Knitting is a method of making fabric that involves wrapping threads around each other using needles. Learn the purpose of knitting, how to cast on, and basic stitches.

September 29 | 10AM-1PM 

  • Cardboard Loom Weaving: Learn the art of weaving using your own cardboard loom (Make and Take).
  • Button Making: Design a unique button to wear!


October 2022 Schedule

October Weekdays on the 1/2 hour from 10AM-3:30PM

  • Victorian Mourning Customs Tour: Tour the Murray Building and learn about 19th century mourning practices including flowers, household rituals, and classic literature. These tours take place every weekday in October.

Tuesdays in October (October 4, 11, 18, & 25) | 10AM-1PM

  • Chapel Music Tours: Tour the Century Memorial Chapel and learn the history of the first building moved to Naper Settlement. End the tour with haunting musical selections played on one of the Chapel organs.  
  • Paper Luminaries Craft: Design and light up the night with these shelf or window decorations.
  • Halloween Pipe Cleaner Craft: Make spooky characters using pipe cleaners.
  • Apple Activities: See how apples were peeled, pressed, and turned into pie.

October 19 | 10AM-1PM

  • Weed Ladies Demonstration: Join the Weed Ladies of the Naperville Heritage Society as they weave their magic with vines, sticks, and grasses.
