Watch historical demonstrations, make crafts, and learn about history at our on-site activities from May through October. These activities are included in general museum admission at Naper Settlement. Please see the schedule below for the dates and times of this month's activities. Adventures Into the Past - August 2022 Schedule

Blast back in history with Adventures Into the Past at Naper Settlement! Each month there will be a different theme with crafts, activities, and demonstrations pertaining to the theme. August’s theme is Food Preservation. Join us as we explore food preservation on the farm. 

August 9

  • Food Preservation Scavenger Hunt: Enjoy a scavenger hunt about food preservation with clues hidden around the Log House, Halfway House, Pine Craig Mansion, Daniels House, and Building Naperville exhibit. Scavenger hunt materials will be handed out at Halfway House.
    • Time: 10AM-1PM
  • Game - How Do you Preserve That?: Using fake foods (potatoes, corns, beans, etc.), guests will be asked to match with the best preservation technique (for example, corn can be dried).
    • Time: 10AM-1PM
  • “Learn More” with Dr. Andrea Field - How Does it Work? Preservation Matching Game: Using historic photographs and materials, guests will match preservation techniques together (for example, an ice house with an ice box). We will also talk about how each preservation strategy works to keep food from decaying. 
    • Time: 10:30AM-11:30AM
  • Preservation Demonstration - The Art of Drying Flowers: Learn the techniques of the Weed Ladies of the Naperville Heritage Society! Join the Weed Ladies to learn hands-on floral designing and watch demonstrations on the process of air drying, desiccants, glycerin, and flower pressing. 
    • Time: 2-3PM

August 10

  • Calligraphy Basics: Using a calling card, guests will learn calligraphy basics and practice writing their names.
    • Time: 11AM-12PM
  • Yarn and Paper Dolls: We’ll demonstrate how children made their own toys with the resources they had available. Guests can also create their own dolls.
    • Time: 2-3PM

August 12

  • Fun Pioneer Photos: Have your photo taken pioneer style at our Log House. Clothing, props, and accessories are provided. Pre-registration is required. Photos will be emailed.  Please click here to register.
    • Time: 15-minute time slots available from 1-3PM
  • Hoop Rolling Demonstration: Guests will learn the history of hoop trundling and then practice keeping the hoop upright. 
    • Time: 11AM-12PM and 2-3PM

August 16

August 23 & 30
