Teaching Unvarnished Workshops
This full-day teacher professional development workshop is FREE to Illinois middle and high school teachers. The workshop will feature the online exhibit UNVARNISHED: Housing Discrimination in the Northern and Western United States and its Educator Resources. Digging deeper into the Illinois housing story, the workshop will also feature a traveling exhibit that models a deep dive into local history. All workshops offer the same content. There will be pre-workshop readings that need to be completed before attending the workshop.

TEACHERS WILL:
- Learn the history of housing discrimination across the northern and western United States. Focusing on Illinois and placing it in the national context, participants will use and explore primary materials, pertinent scholarship, and effective pedagogy.
- Learn how the widespread use of racially, ethnically, and religiously restrictive covenants and sundown town practices, among other tools of discrimination, created segregated communities across the state.
- Learn how systemic, purposeful, and deep-rooted these practices were and their lasting impacts today.
- Learn how to teach complicated history with primary resources, student-focused inquiry, and Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s framework.
- Learn what Illinois Learning Standards align with Unvarnished.
- Become part of a network of teachers, museum professionals, and scholars working in this topic area.
- Earn 8 CPDU hours.
