J.L. Nichols & Company

James Lawrence Nichols was born in 1851. He came to Naperville in 1876 at the age of 25 to attend North-Western College (known as North Central College since 1926). During his career he was a professor, business owner, author and publisher. In 1886 he started a publishing company called J.L. Nichols & Company, and published books that he and other authors wrote. J.L. Nichols died in 1895 at the age of 44. He left $10,000 to the City of Naperville to establish a library, and in 1898 the Nichols Library was opened. James Lawrence Nichols II took over the company after his father's death, and continued to publish books until about 1941.     Business Guide
